What Does It Mean To Be Gas Safe Registered?

When looking for a heating engineer, you’ll most likely read about their compliance with the Gas Safe Register. If you’re unsure about what the Gas Safe Register is and why it’s important that all boiler installers, cooker installers etc. are compliant with it, please carry on reading the rest of this post.

What is the Gas Safe Register?

The Gas Safe Register is an official list of gas businesses that are registered to legally work with boilers, cookers, fires and all other gas appliances. Think of the Gas Safe Register as being similar to the service provided by the DVLA. Where drivers in the UK are legally required to have a driving license to legally and safely drive on the roads, heating engineers are legally required to have a Gas Safe Registration number to legally and safely work with the aforementioned services (boilers, cookers etc.)

To ensure that all heating engineers meet the high standards set by the Gas Safe Register, the organisation regularly carries out inspections on recently serviced properties to ensure that the installer has installed all gas appliances/fittings correctly and safely. If you have worries, call the Gas Safe Register and they’ll come and check.

Why is the Gas Safe Register important?

Gas is dangerous; it’s as simple as that. Every year around 50 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning in the UK and there are as many as 4,000 people admitted to hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning treatment.

A lot of these instances could be prevented by ensuring the safe use of gas and it’s safe installation/maintenance by a Gas Safe Registered heating engineer. Our advice is to ensure that an engineer checks all gas appliances/fittings in your property on a yearly basis. One way you can do this is through a regular boiler service. Our previous post covered all of the benefits of boiler servicing; you can take a read of that here.

Always ask

Please don’t be afraid to ask a heating engineer for their Gas Safe Registration number. Any engineer that is compliant with Gas Safe will not shy away from doing so and after all, it is your property that is at risk. Be certain, be safe and ask!
